The Shannon Pot

out and back 19 km; 5 hrs; Start: Map 26 G991267

Although not a Waterways Walk, some may be interested in walking north from Dowra along the Cavan Way and visiting the Shannon Pot, the source of the Shannon. Dowra is on the Leitrim Way - see below - about 16 km north of Drumshambo.

The Cavan Way provides a pleasant hill and valley walking connection between the Leitrim Way at Dowra and the Ulster Way at Blacklion village. For further information about the Cavan Way contact:

Fewer, Michael. 1996. The Way-marked Trails of Ireland. Gill & Macmillan
See Chapter 9, The Leitrim Way. This chapter includes a description of the southern section of the Leitrim Way commencing at Drumshambo.

The distance from Drumshambo to Manorhamilton is approximately 50 km. Many will enjoy the first few kilometers which include panoramic views over Lough Allen. A two hour walk should provide a nice introduction to the Leitrim Way.

Maps:

- Map 26, Lough Allen and part of Shannon-Erne Waterway

Ordnance Survey of Ireland, Discovery Series 1:50,000
- Map 33, Lough Key, Acres Lake, and St John's Lough to Lough Forbes

Map 26 is disappointing. At the time of writing the version available in the shops in Dublin is dated 1984. The way-marked trails are not shown on the map. Hopefully the Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland will publish a more up-to-date version shortly. East West Mapping may be able to provide maps of The Leitrim Way and of The Cavan Way.
